Small Animal Vet Required at Robson & Prescott - January 2018

The role is full time and would suit an experienced (2yrs+) or a new grad with a passion for small animals.  Full and part-time colleagues would be considered.

We are a mixed practice with eight branches in the Morpeth area treating small and large animals including equine and farm plus exotics.

Our main animal hospital is a new purpose built site and includes state-of-the-art facilities with four operating theatres, a dental suite, fully-equipped diagnostic laboratory, X-ray, ultrasound, and endoscopy facilities.  There are separate wards for dogs, cats, birds, small mammals and exotics, a physio and hydrotherapy suite, and six consulting rooms.

The practice employs more than 80 staff, including 18 vets (including certificate holders in surgery, medicine, and exotics), 16 qualified veterinary nurses, 7 trainee nurses, 8 nursing auxiliaries, hydrotherapists and administration/support help.  External specialists in ophthalmology, internal medicine and ultrasonography also work from the hospital on a regular basis.

The Role:

This is an extremely busy practice.  The ideal candidate will need to be level headed and able to cope working in a fast-paced environment but with the support of a superb, experienced nursing team.  The practice aims to provide a gold-standard service wherever possible.  A willingness to follow-up cases and a passion for thorough diagnostics and investigations would be an asset.

The post would suit either a new/recent graduate or more experienced colleagues.  The current team is an extremely happy and welcoming working unit.  Being a team player with good communication and customer care skills both internal and external are key.

Training Routes

Veterinary Nurse training is conducted through colleges and universities that offer qualifications approved by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

You can become a veterinary nurse either via vocational training or via a higher education qualification. You will need to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs grade C or above, including English, Maths and a Science. It is also advisable to gain some work experience in veterinary practice or similar job role before applying.

Vocational Training

The Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing is available either on a full-time basis or apprenticeship style alongside a job in an approved training veterinary practice. This qualification is most suited to those who prefer a more practical style of learning.

Robson and Prescott do offer a limited number of training placements. These placements are normally offered to our nursing auxiliary staff who will have already spent some time in practice learning the basic skills we feel are so important to have before embarking on the qualification. If you are interested in this type of training at our practice then please send your CV plus a covering letter to our Head Nurse.

Higher Education

Full-time Foundation or Honours Nusing degrees are offered at some universities. This course is more academic, but you will still need to have some clinical placements in an approved training practice. Applications for these courses should be made via UCAS.
